2025 Review: Making Music

Rather than do a ‘best of’ style post, every year I’m doing a rundown of what music I’ve made this year, and what I’ve learned from doing so.

Previous posts in this series: [2023] [2024]

tl;dr

Once again, haven’t done any music at all. And this year, I haven’t even managed to find the time to sit down and record audio demos for all of my blog posts.

Not Even Any Excuses, This Year

Let’s not pretend otherwise: this year, my musical output has been downright terrible.

At the time of drafting this, I’ve only done audio demos for four blog posts in the last six months. (Hopefully I’ll publish a few more before this gets published.)

Worse still, I’ll often turn on my amp, play for about five minutes, and then turn my amp back off. It’s not like I hate my tone or anything; in over 35 years of continuous playing, I’ve never been happier with how my guitar and amp sounds.

I just don’t have much spare energy for making music atm.

I thought I’d tackle this by setting Thursday evenings aside for music (like we used to do with the band). I haven’t managed a single Thursday session all year.

I even took out a Truefire subscription to try and improve my technique and range. I found their platform’s poor UX (and their relentless notifications trying to sell me more products) weren’t for me. Probably my biggest waste of money on musical stuff in 2025.

Any Plans For 2026?

By the end of 2026, I want to be back in the habit of one evening a week for music. It doesn’t have to be Thursdays (our old band practice night). It just has to happen.
