I recently bought a new floor-standing speaker stand for my home studio. How did I get on with it? Here are my first impressions.
What Did You Buy?
I bought a Gravity Vari-Tilt studio monitor speaker stand. Yes, just the one!
It’s a floor-standing stand for a speaker, such as a studio monitor. It’s height-adjustable, and you can adjust the tilt of the top plate (the bit where the monitor sits) too.
Why Did You Buy It?
I wanted to free up some space on my desk, and the easiest way to do that was to move one of my studio monitor speakers onto a separate stand.
There’s a second benefit too: I finally get to have both monitors an equal distance away from my listening position. Arguably, that’s far more important than making some space on my desk!
It’s Larger Than I Expected
How large? Put it this way: when they shipped it out, Andertons put it in a guitar box.
That’s a good thing. I don’t know about you, but I certainly don’t want to put large, heavy studio equipment onto something that’s flimsy.
Put it this way: if my speaker fell off the stand, not only would the speaker itself probably be ruined, but I’d be worried about what damage it would do if it fell onto my laptop.
This stand is very sturdy.
The Minimum Height … Is A Little Taller Than I Hoped For
One of my speakers is still on my desk (the desk is in the corner of the room; there’s no available floor space there for a second stand), and it’s sat on one of those isolating speaker stands. Total height off the floor: approx 85cm – and I don’t have any obvious way to raise the speaker higher than that.
The Gravity stand has a minimum height of about 90cm. That leaves me with about a 5cm height difference between the two speakers 🙁
I’m working around this by adjusting the tilt on the Gravity stand, so that (hopefully) the sound is good enough at the listening position.
Does it matter, especially for a home hack like me? I have no idea. But it might matter to you. There again, if it does, you’d probably have both speakers on matching stands anyway, so 🤷♂️
Final Thoughts
Ever since I got these speakers last year, I’ve felt like my music hobby was taking over my home office a little too much. They really changed the vibe of the room, due to their size. Having both of them on the desk was making me feel a little cramped.
Thanks to this stand, I have my working desk space back. That’s a big win.
