Marshall Origin 20 Demo

Not long how until Marshall’s new Origin series of amps launch! Demo units are starting to go out to the YouTube gear community, and Burgs has just posted his demo of this highly anticipated amp.

The Marshall Origin series has the potential to become the de facto pedal platform amp for a generation. It’s very competitively priced, and (unlike Fender amps) it also comes as an amp head. You could get an Origin head, a Two Notes Captor, and run that into your DAW for silent home recording.

Sadly, this demo doesn’t show us how well the Origin works as a pedal platform. But if you want to hear the Origin as an a stand-alone amp, Burgs does a great job of showing us what this can do.

Dialling In A Classic Marshall Amp Tone

Jeff McErlain has posted a demo of how he dials in his Marshall amp to get those classic tones.

Jeff shows us how he sets up his amp to suit his neck pickup first, with the gain set to leave plenty of room for picking dynamics. From there, he uses the tone and volume controls on his guitars to get the bridge pickup sounding great without sounding too harsh. And finally, he sticks a Klone in front of the amp as a clean boost for lead tones.

This is a fantastic video if you’re chasing these classic tones.

A Wall Of Marshall Stacks At Home

What would a wall of 100W Marshall heads, with eight 4×12 cabs, sound like at home? Johan Segeborn has found out for us, so that we don’t need to upset the neighbours.

I swear that you can see the camera shaking from the amount of air that these Marshall stacks are moving!

I think it sounds glorious too. The room looks (and sounds) very lively – it’s adding a lot of reflections to the recording, because Johan’s using a room mic to capture this. Treat the room to take some of that away, and it would sound truly immense.

Blindfold Challenge – Affordable High Gain Amps

Chappers and the Captain have posted the 2nd part of their high-gain amp blindfold challenge. This time, they’re looking at 7 amps at £1,000 or below.

These kind of videos are a great opportunity to hear a bunch of amps side by side. Exact same guitar, exact same guitarist, and it looks like they’re running each amp into the exact same cab (so they’re all mic’d up the same). The only difference is the amp itself.

And these aren’t aspirational boutique sell-a-kidney amps. These are the kind of amps that you’d be looking at if you want a real valve amp for home and gigging.

Marshall Origin Series Demo

These have to be one of the most anticipated amp releases of 2018 – and now we can finally hear them for the first time, thanks to Andertons.

Vintage-style Marshalls that are priced to go head-to-head with Fender’s Hot Rod series? That come in head or combo format? Yes please! Oh, and they take pedals really well? Take my money now!

Seriously, I think these have the potential to become the standard pedal platform amp. I’m looking forward to trying them myself when they arrive in the shops in mid-April. And there’s a good chance I’ll pickup one of the heads for an upcoming project that I have in mind.

Marshall DSL40CR In-Depth

When Shane recently demoed the new Marshall DSL amps, he liked them so much that he went out and bought one for himself. And he’s kindly gone and posted an in-depth look at what the 40W combo sounds like.

Watch it all the way through to the end for his honest pros and cons of his new amp. and some footage of him using the amp live with an ES-335 style guitar.

If you’re thinking of getting one of these, you’ll find his comments about the two master volumes particularly informative. They’re especially important if you’re thinking of buying this amp to play mostly at home tone volume levels.

One Marshall Is All You Need

Continuing this afternoon’s Marshall theme (yeah, the Metro Plex module has made quite the impression this morning 🙂 ), here’s a video from Johan Segeborn looking at a modded Marshall 1987X.

This particular Marshall has been modded so that it can be switched between something like half a dozen classic Marshall circuits. Very cool, if that’s your kind of sound.

It’s also worth a watch just to see how different two guitarists sound, even through the exact same amp and speaker cab.

We’re going to learn a lot from these videos.

Donner Green Land Pedal Demo

Shane’s back, with a demo of Donner’s Green Land Pedal. Even if you’re not interested in the pedal, it’s worth watching just to listen to Shane tear it up in the opening jam.

This pedal reminds me of the Mooer micro preamp pedals that came out last year or the year before. They were designed to offer two channels from classic amps, complete with built-in cab sim for direct recording.

With this pedal, Donner has done something a little different with the concept. Instead of offering two channels from the same amp, this pedal offers Fender and Marshall tones all in one box. It’s also got built-in reverb. I don’t remember that being on the Mooer preamps?

Fender vs Marshall are two classic tones. Having them both available with the press of a foot switch sounds like a winning idea. How come no-one else has done this before?

Marshall DSL1C 2018 Review

Over at In The Blues, Shane has posted a review of the new Marshall DSL1C. It’s a 1W valve amp – a bit like the Blackstar HT-1 – that’s likely to be on your list if you’re looking for a small practice amp for home.

The old DSL range was very popular, especially the DSL40C combo that featured so much on Anderton’s Sound Like series. From the HNAD forum posts I’ve seen so far, the new DSL range might prove to be even better.

Me, I’m waiting for the Marshall Origin amps to land …
